Applying to UK Universities Without IELTS: MOI and Alternative English Routes Explained
By StudyPortal.ai Team26 Sept 20261 min read
A clear guide to the English-language routes UK universities accept beyond IELTS — including MOI letters and approved alternative tests.
Quick answer
Many UK universities in our partner catalogue accept alternatives to IELTS, most commonly a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter or an approved alternative English test.
What is a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter?
An MOI letter confirms that your previous degree was taught and assessed in English. Where accepted, it can satisfy the English-language requirement without a separate test.
Alternative English tests
Depending on the university, you may be able to use:
- PTE Academic
- LanguageCert
- Duolingo English Test
How to confirm your route
